NZ specific AI and Generative AI Policy template for education

An AI & Generative AI Policy in education isn’t optional anymore. Schools and tertiary institutions are already surrounded by AI, whether they have a policy or not. Students are using ChatGPT style tools to draft essays, teachers are turning to AI to plan lessons, and admin teams are experimenting with AI for reporting, analytics, and communications.

Without a clear AI and Generative AI (GenAI) policy, all of this happens in an ad-hoc, “make it up as we go” way. That’s risky for students, for staff, and for the institution’s reputation.

This is a co created with education experts, an AI and Gen AI Policy for NZ educational facilities such as kura, schools, universities, polytechnics and adult learning centres. This is unique as it carefully balances NZ educational requirements with intertwined Te Tiriti o Waitangi commitments.

The Policy is in two parts. One part of a document (The Policy) and the second part is a spreadsheet (Whakapapa of AI and Gen AI usage) for students to record their AI usage.

Download here a zip file of the two files.

The Policy can be edited and adapted to meet your needs. Noting School Docs are still yet to provide an And Gen AI policy for their system.

There is no ownership of the document. You are encouraged to copy and utilise it as you see fit for your organisation. Any feedback would greatly be appreciated to assist the wider Aotearoa New Zealand educational sector to thrive with AI and Gen AI usage by both staff and students
