Below is a a list of some of the traditional (or pre settlement) hapū names of Ngāi Tahu. The list uses ‘ng’ and not ‘k’ and any use of the list should consider the dialectal variations of words.

Before Ngāi Tahu’s Settlement with the Crown in 1996, the Ngāi Tahu Māori Trust Board Whakapapa Unit has listings of hundreds of Ngāi Tahu hapū names. Then Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu Act 1996, sec 2, Ngāi Tahu identified 5’primary Hapū:  ‘primary Hāpu Kāti Kurī, Ngāti Irakehu, Kāti Huirapa, Ngāi Tūāhuriri and Ngāi Te Ruahikihiki.

That left many other Ngāi Tahu hapū names without statutory recognition – including Ngāti Wheke (Donald Couch, 2025 -Rīpapa a Manawhenua Perspective).
