Maori ICT Scholarships

The Dominion Post has reported on EDS and Māori Education Trust offering ICT scholarships to Māori.

This is a great small step for Māori into ICT, however I have a feeling it is more of a corporate opportunity for EDS than a genuine concern. EDS is the main client of NZgovernment.

I have to agree with my outspoken colleauge Ariki Gell on the apprenticeship schemes. I am inclined to say that the government needs to look at apprenticships for all NZers not just Māori. In fact, i do not see why ICT companies do not offer more apprenticeship/on the job training schemes for suitable individuals. It would certainly reduce the need to seek suitable staff from overseas emplyment expos and could be cheaper than outsourcing ?

Indeed!. There are also no scholarships available for professional cources such as Microsoft Professional courses, Cisco etc.

It would be good if such funding agencies woke up to the current world, that there is more education opportunities than tertiary.
